Faint Not Mom

Be Encouraged. Be Creative. Be Yourself.

This is a blog by Joanna Appel about living a life of faith as a mother and an artist. Following Jesus in the midst of crazy, messy, life is hard.  We all need people to come alongside us, to inspire and encourage us.  Faint Not, World!  You are not alone!

Happy Holy Week, Kids!—Day 2

This year, I really want my boys to get a glimpse of the real meaning of Easter. Last Friday, I wrote a post about seven things to do with your toddlers for Holy Week and I invited you to join in with me and my family! On that post there is a "How To" for each activity as well as The Appel Family plan for Holy Week. I am going to be posting about what we do everyday to celebrate, learn, and go deeper with Jesus this Easter.

Holy Week—Day 2

Monday - Pray, Introduce New Scripture: 1 John 3:16a

Our focus today was to introduce our Holy Week scripture memory verse which is 1 John 3:16, "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid his life down for us."

We have memorized several scriptures as a family. The boys memorized John 3:16 during lent and they still walk around reciting it. I think that even if they don't fully understand the concept, God's word is written on their hearts and it has a lasting impact that we can't fully comprehend!

Today, I wrote out our scripture on a piece of paper and had the boys decorate it with markers and crayons. Then after dinner we sat down and I read it to them, did the actions that I had come up with for the verse, and then we practiced it three or four more times. At the end, they all got a small piece of Easter candy. I am really excited to take them through this process of learning a new verse! Here are some photos:

The other great thing is that they enjoyed our Palm Sunday play so much that we acted out the Triumphal Entry again, donkey rides and being Jesus was obviously the main attraction, but I think it is cool that they had fun enough to want to do it again!

I hope you had a great Palm Sunday and that you are taking time to meditate on Jesus and His great and perfect love for us. Please let me know what you are doing to celebrate and remember! If you want to join us in learning a new verse together, I have reposted the "How To" below. See you tomorrow!

Memorize a Scripture:

The ‘How To’:

  • Choose a scripture that is short and has words that they will be able to understand—stay away from words like ‘transgressions’ and ‘tabernacle’
  • Write it down on paper for them to decorate and then hang it somewhere in the house so they can see it.
  • Make up a song or actions to the verse.
  • Practice the verse everyday at the same time.
  • Don’t forget the reference!

Here are some suggestions for verses to memorize: John 3:16. John 14:6, Galatians 2:20, 1 John 3:16
